Seniors Discover the Benefits of Pilates

There’s no denying that age takes its toll on our bodies. Bones lose density, joints tighten up and endurance falls off. But just like finding the right mechanic to keep that classic Mustang in your garage running for decades, the right exercise program can keep your maturing body humming along the highway of life, too. Increasing numbers of seasoned citizens are finding their answer in Pilates.

While Joseph Pilates conceived his exercises to benefit dancers and athletes, the Pilates method has evolved to include all age groups of every athletic level. With its focus on building core muscles and increasing the range of motion, a properly designed Pilates program is well suited to seniors as well. Your instructor can tailor Pilates exercises in sync with your fitness level no matter if you’re in your sixth, seventh or eighth decade. And a good instructor willmonitor your workouts to be sure the movements you tackle are safe too.

Aging usually brings a more sedentary pace and an attendant loss of muscle tone, decreased flexibility, joint stiffness and pain results. The low-impact nature of Pilates exercises is a safe way for seniors to revitalize strength and flexibility while improving circulation and balance. A number of Pilates exercises are safe and effective for those with limited mobility. Several can be performed from a sitting position while imparting strength-building benefits and gradually improving overall movement.

Pilates is a safe and sensible conditioning program that’s appropriate for all ages and all physical conditions. Supermodels use it to maintain their lithe and lean look and pro athletes use it to keep in peak condition without risking training injuries from other forms of exercise that involve harsh movement. Seniors and even suffers of Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis are finding that Pilates is effective in combating aging and disease.

There’s no time like the present to get started on a plan toward better health and a more enjoyable and productive life. Pilates in the Pines offers a full menu of authentic Pilates training, both free-form mat training and machine exercise with the Reformer. All of our classes are taught by Certified Pilates Teachers, so you can be confident that your workouts will be carefully tailored to your needs and abilities. The Pilates system allows students to add exercises and increase workout intensity as their bodies adapt and develop. That’s one of the many benefits of having your training supervised by our experts who monitor your progress.
