Get Trained by the best in Gyrotonic at Pilates in the Pines

Losing weight, toning the body and gaining more strength and flexibility are trends that never seem to go out of style. While yoga and Pilates are well known, the newest way to combine both forms of exercise into one workout is Gyrotonic®. Gyrotonic has a long list of celebrity followers including Julianne Moore, Liv Tyler, Madonna and even athletes like Tiger Woods. It’s the rare fitness studio that offers Gyrotonic workouts; Pilates in the Pines is one of the few.

Now through the end of 2013, Pilates in the Pines is offering a special discount, 10 Pilates Reformer Classes for just $200, a discount of $100, to introduce newcomers to all forms of Pilates and Gyrotonic workouts.

What is Gyrotonic?

Gyrotonic gets its name from the words “stretch” and “circle” –the basis of the exercise motion used in this form of workout. “Circle” describes the movements in a 360-degree orientation. Floor and machine work opens up the body, mind and spirit, returning a sense of balance through exercise. Each class starts with a small segment of floor work and warm-up and graduates to circular, fluid movements, completing the hour with equipment work for the muscles and joints.

The History of Gyrotonic

While Gyrotonic has been around for decades, it’s only recently gained popularity. Originally created by Hungarian Juliu Horvath in the 1970s when his dancing career ended due to a ruptured Achilles tendon. As a means to recover, he created a yoga technique for dancers called gyrokenesis, which gradually developed into Gyrotonic as it’s called today. Horvath is also the genius behind the equipment used in Gyrotonic classes, including one to help provide resistance through a pulley.

Gyrotonic Versus Yoga

Observers can confuse Gyrotonic workouts with yoga. But while there are similarities, yoga is only one part of the Gyrotonic equation. Focusing on balance, alignment and flexibility, Gyrotonic relies on swimming, pilates and dance techniques just as much as yoga. One difference is that there aren’t closing movements like you will find in yoga and pilates.
