What will Gyrotonic® do for me?
Gyrotonic® is a movement method using specialized equipment to help people improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion. The equipment is highly adjustable and can be customized to each person's unique needs.
The History
Gyrotonic® was designed by Julio Horvath, aHungarian-born swimmer and gymnast. At 19, he began to study classical ballet and within one year became a principal dancer with the Romanian State Opera Ballet. In 1970, he defected from Romania and sought asylum in the United States where he danced with the New York City Opera and the Houston Ballet. While with Houston, he ruptured his Achilles tendon ending his dancing career.
In 1977, he developed a system called "Yoga for Dancers," now called GYROKINESIS®. In the 1980s, he opened White Cloud Studio in New York using the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®.
The Science
Gyrotonic®exercise sequences are composed of spiraling, circular movements which flow together seamlessly in rhythmic repetitions with corresponding breathing patterns. Each movement flows into the next, allowing the joints to move through a natural range of motion without jarring or compression. These carefully crafted sequences create balance, agility, strength, and flexibility.
