Pilates – It’s Not Just for XX

It’s true, most of the proponents extolling the virtues of Pilates on talk shows and infomercials are gorgeous females. But if you think Pilates is a girl thing, you’d better not tell that to Peyton Manning. Or Curt Schilling. Or Demarcus Ware. Or to the cab driver who picked you up at the airport.

While it’s true that most men discover Pilates for a specific reason – sports training or physical rehab, for instance – an increasing number find that Pilates is just a great way to improve overall conditioning and health.

Traditional sports training has stressed the use of circuit machines or free weights to build muscles in specific parts of the body. But as the workouts have gotten tougher, athletes and their trainers have found that over-stressing individual muscle groups can have disastrous results. The solution – total body workouts that result in better overall conditioning and fewer injuries. The answer – Pilates exercise, both free mats and specialized machines like the Reformer and Power Plate.

Physicians and physical therapists recommend Pilates training for recovery and rehabilitation of injuries and surgery, too. And persons in occupations that require extended periods of standing or sitting such as dentists, barbers, and professional drivers find that Pilates training helps their bodies endure and recover from the physical stresses of their jobs.

The simple fact is that Pilates training is great for anyone of any gender or age to build longer, leaner muscles, to improve muscle definition in the arms, legs, glutes and abdomen, and to improve posture while strengthening bones and preventing osteoporosis.
