Know Your Pilates Dress Code

You wouldn’t run a mile in high heels, and similarly, you don’t want to do Pilates in blue jeans.

The most important aspect of clothing you wear to a Pilates class is that it should allow for a full range of motion without any restrictions, pulls or catches. This is essential as you do not want any resistance against your body while you move through various poses and exercises.

With that in mind, your clothing should be comfortable so that you can focus on your workout, not struggle against uncomfortable clothing. We recommend using softer, wicking fabrics that will pull sweat away from your body and dry quickly. Wear a fabric that isn’t going to trap heat next to your body and cause you to overheat. Since these fabrics tend to be made with spandex and other stretchy materials, they are able to move with your body, even when you pull the fabric tight.

Look for clothing that is form fitting. It doesn’t have to hug every curve of your body, but the instructors need to be able to see how your body is moving to be able to correct your poses to prevent injury. Wear a leotard to prevent an inadvertent peep-show to others in the class.

Avoid wearing jewelry and perfumes. Jewelry can easily break, get lost, or even become a risk if it gets snagged on clothing or equipment. It’s why pro sports players don’t wear jewelry during a game. We strongly recommend that you don’t wear it to a Pilates session at all. As your body heats up the perfume will become more pungent to everyone in the room. This can be offensive to your classmates, and dangerous for anyone who suffers from asthma or allergies.

Grip socks can easily become your new, favorite accessory. These are toe socks that have small, rubber grips along the sole. The grips help you maintain traction on the floor of the Pilates studio even when you start to sweat.
