Incorporating Movement Can Treat Depression

Pilates can transform the body and the psyche. Including beneficial movement into your life can help treat depression. The LiveStrong.com website explains it this way:

Exercise is beneficial for alleviating depression, and this is thought to be due to the effect of physical activity on neurotransmitter synthesis. Dopamine may have a distinct role in fighting stress and in countering depression by acting on the limbic system, a part of the brain that is important in emotional response. An article published in "Neuro Endocrinology Letters" in 2010 found "a close connection to the brain's pleasure, reward and motivation circuits that are particularly bound to limbic structures and to endogenous dopamine, morphine, and nitric oxide signaling."

Other ways movement can help mood include:

1. Increased blood flow in the body from exercise also goes to the brain, helping to feed the brain’s reward centers.
2. Pilates helps you look better, feel better inside and feel more proud of yourself, improving self-esteem, which increases happiness.
3. The body functions better after continued Pilates workouts. Breathe more fully, digest better (including being more regular) and improve your sleep. You literally feel better which also helps with depression.
4. The ability to sleep better deserves a little extra notice. When people get enough sleep, on a consistent basis, they look at life more positively.
5. Because Pilates helps enable the body to do more of the enjoyable things you want to do in life (whether it’s gardening, cycling, hiking, or even having more sex), your life is augmented in a positive ways, improving your overall outlook.
6. When working with an instructor or taking classes with other people, you benefit from social interaction. Positive support from others improves your mood and helps alleviate depression.
