Getting Off to a Safe Start with Pilates

The year’s nearly half gone and you’ve put off getting in shape long enough. You’ve looked around and decided that Pilates looks like the right program for you. You bought a video and you’re ready to rock. Now put the video away and get some professional help before you hurt yourself.

Some of the beautiful things about Pilates are that it’s low-impact, it doesn’t require a bunch of equipment, and it uses your body’s natural movements to build strength and conditioning. The exercises are simple and graceful and look very easy when a trained professional does them in front of a camera. When you do them…well, that could be a different story.

Joseph Pilates was an expert in exercise and kinetics and developed his training exercises based on knowledge of movement. Pilates uses the body’s natural movements to build long, lean muscles and improve conditioning. Done properly, you’ll get a good, productive workout. Done improperly not only diminishes effectiveness, it can also result in injury to muscles and joints.

That’s why it’s important to start your Pilates training under the supervision of a certified Pilates instructor. They will assess your individual body type and observe how you react to different movements and exercises. They will make sure that you do the proper exercises for you and that you don’t go beyond your capabilities. They will add to your workout routine when it’s right to do so. In short, they will use their training and expertise to tailor a conditioning program that’s as independent as your DNA, not one size fits all.

That makes it important to know who you’re training with. Teachers at Pilates in the Pines, have studied both the original exercise forms and the philosophy behind them, including the proper use of Pilates machines like the Reformer. When our trainers integrate new exercises and machines into your workouts, they do so with an understanding of how the additional movements promote the overarching Pilates goals without subjecting you to stresses that could lead to injury.

Pilates in the Pines offers a full menu of authentic Pilates training, both free-form mat training and machine exercise with the Reformer. Classes are taught Monday – Thursday and on Saturday mornings, alternating Mat Classes (participants are taken through a series of exercises using the body alone) and Reformer Classes (students use the Pilates Reformer machine for their workout.) Private sessions are available during the week when regular classes aren’t scheduled, plus all day Fridays and on Saturdays after classes by appointment. All classes are taught by Certified Pilates Teachers.

As an incentive to get started properly and safely, Pilates in the Pines offers a special package of 10 Pilates Reformer classes for $200.
